What is the A2 Key for Schools (KETfS)?

A2 Key for Schools, also known as Cambridge English: Key for Schools (KET for Schools), is the first step in the Cambridge English exams. A2 Key for Schools is a specific version of A2 Key with content geared towards the interests and experiences of school-age children rather than adults. Both exams have the same level as well as the same format. However, A2 Key for Schools is based on familiar themes and situations, adapting to students' interests, increasing their motivation to learn English and giving them the confidence to use their language skills in real-life situations.

Read more about the difference between the for Schools (fS) and standard versions of the exams.

It proves your ability to use English to communicate in simple situations, and that you now have a solid foundation to build on. It is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference

At A2, you should be able to:

  • understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases
  • introduce yourself and answer basic questions about personal details
  • interact with English speakers who talk slowly and clearly
  • write short, simple notes

Is A2 Key for Schools for me?

In Portugal A2 is aligned with the and 8º ano according to the Metas Curriculares de Inglês. In some cases, strong 2º cíclo students with the necessary background take A2 Key for Schools. It’s a logical next step after having taken either A1 Movers or A2 Flyers and a good place for older children to start learning English too.

It should also give you the confidence to go on and study for higher-level exams such as  B1 Preliminary for Schools and B2 First for Schools.
